About the Workshop

Centrosomes are microtubule-organizing centers (MTOC) that function in conserved and diverse cellular and organismal processes. Their deregulation causes various human diseases including cancer and developmental disorders. Multiple paradigms of centrosome biology and pathophysiology have been significantly reshaped due to emerging biological concepts and breakthrough technologies. Among these major advances are the diversity of centrosomes/MTOCs in different organisms and cell types within a single organism, molecular understanding of mechanisms that underlie centrosome-linked diseases, and their crosstalk with other cellular structures. Moreover, centriolar architecture and composition have begun to be uncovered with unprecedented spatial and temporal detail using advanced imaging and omics approaches that only became available recently. Consequently, centrosome field has expanded from cell biology into genetics, physiology, physics, and translational innovation. The Hybrid EMBO Workshop "Centrosomes in Development, Disease and Evolution" (Centrosome2023) continues the series of triennial European Centrosome and Spindle Pole Body Conferences that attract participants from Europe and the world. This meeting has now become the largest centrosome meeting worldwide.

The Hybrid EMBO Workshop Centrosome2023 will cover 7 main topics:

  1. Centrosome structure and biogenesis,
  2. Centrosome and MTOC evolution and diversity,
  3. Centrosome signaling and function,
  4. Centrosomes in cell division,
  5. Centrosomes in development and disease,
  6. Interplay of centrosomes with other cellular structures,
  7. Basal bodies.

Social events:
1. Conference Dinner, 28 September 2023 – 50 EUR
Time: 19:30 – 23:00

Registration to attend is necessary.
On Thursday evening, the Conference Dinner will be held as the social highlight of the Centrosome2023 to give you the opportunity for social networking and to reminisce about the conference. You will enjoy a delicious dinner with Turkish food and music and breathtaking panoramic views over İstanbul and the waterfront.

2. Power Breakfast, 27 – 28 September 2023 – 10 EUR
Time: 07:30 – 08:30
Location: The Marmara Taksim

Registration to attend is necessary.
The two interactive “power breakfast” sessions will take place at the Marmara Taksim. Important discussions about shaping key elements of our research culture will be held during the power breakfasts. These breakfasts will provide a forum to discuss the following topics:

Wednesday, 27 September 2023
Support mechanisms for early career researchers: The uncertainty, lack of security and ‘publish or perish’ model makes the transition to independence particularly stressful for early career researchers. COVID19 pandemic exacerbated these problems and created now ones. This breakfast will involve discussion on resources and networks that can help.

Thursday, 28 September 2023
Diversity and Inclusion in Science: How should the culture of research change to include more people from different background. This breakfast will involve discussions on determining the problems and proposing solutions on how to make science more equitable, inclusive, and diverse for the benefit of all.

Payment

Payment details will be sent to participants by email after registration. Types of payments accepted are international bank transfers and credit card payments.

Selection criteria

Registration will be on a first-come first-served basis. Your place can only be confirmed after payment of the registration fee.

When submitting your abstract, you can apply for an oral or poster presentation. The selection committee including organisers of the workshop will select about 25 short talks and 20 flash talks. The committee will screen the submitted abstracts in terms of originality, quality, and relevance to the workshop theme. Priority will be given to abstracts that include unpublished data and that complement topics that are not covered by invited speakers. The organisers will ensure a balanced participation of senior and early career scientists, especially graduate students and postdocs. Likewise, they will aim for a diverse group of scientists regarding gender and geographical location.

Abstract guidelines

Your abstract should contain the following information:

  • Title
  • Authors and affiliations (the presenting author should be underlined)
  • Maximum abstract length is 250 words. It should contain a clear description of the results that will be presented, their biological significance and impact, and the methods employed to obtain the results.

Please indicate whether you would like your abstract to be considered for an oral presentation.

Poster specifications

Poster sessions will be held in person. Poster size will be communicated by email. Poster presenters are responsible for mounting and removal of their posters. They are expected to be available at their poster for discussion during their assigned session. The workshop secretariat will supply materials for the mounting of posters.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Special travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for scientists working in Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovenia and Turkey. Grants are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

A maximum of 700 Euros per participant are available to cover registration fees, travel, and accommodation (no additional subsistence costs can be covered). To apply, please indicate the itemized amount requested in the travel grants section of the registration form.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant.
