About the Workshop

Cell polarization is an essential first step for many biological processes ranging from cell motility to tissue and organism morphogenesis. At the same time, cell polarization requires a precise control of their internal organization, which is the result of a complex dynamic interplay between the cytoskeleton, molecular motors, signaling molecules, and membranes. Recent technological advances have helped obtaining valuable new information on the different temporal and spatial scales that govern cell polarization. We have obtained structures of membrane-localized protein complexes, demonstrated the emergent self-organizing properties of proteins and cellular systems and shed light on how to modulate the shape of membranes and tissues to build entire tissues or organisms. To develop a mechanistic understanding of these processes, we need to integrate our existing knowledge on cell polarization, from the tissue level down to individual molecules, obtained from minimal reconstituted systems to whole animals, from experimental and theoretical approaches. This EMBO Workshop will bring together a highly diverse group of scientists (cell & structural biologists, (bio)chemists, experimental & theoretical physicists) to present the state-of-the-art of their fields, to exchange ideas, and to identify synergies between them to establish new collaborations and open new research fields.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

Participants will be selected on the basis of scientific excellence with a strong consideration for PhD students and early-stage postdocs, ensuring excellent gender, demographic, geographic and basic/applied research balance. 2+ travel grants will be allocated according to EMBO travel grant guidelines.

Organizers will select 18 applicants for short talks and 18 applicants for flash-talks (minimum 50% PhD, remainder junior Postdocs), with consideration of excellence, research area and diversity. All other applicants will present their work during poster sessions.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts (maximum 350 words) must be written in English. The organisers will review all abstracts and selected participants will receive an email to let us know whether their abstracts have been chosen for an Oral or a Poster presentation on 21st March 2023.

Poster specifications

The poster can be prepared in free design and fonts.

Please follow the sizes below:
Width: 90 cm
Height: 120 cm

This corresponds to an A0 vertical format.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. More information is available on the EMBO Travel Grants' page.

Special travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for scientists working in Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and Turkey. Grants are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

A maximum of 700 Euros per participant are available to cover registration fees, travel, and accommodation (no additional subsistence costs can be covered). To apply, please indicate the itemized amount requested in the travel grants section of the registration form.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant.
