About the Workshop

This EMBO Workshop will bring together experts in diverse domains of bacterial biology for a four-day meeting focused on discussing frontier aspects of bacterial morphogenesis, survival and virulence. Based on the previous edition of the meeting in 2016 (Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala) and BMSV 2019 (Cape Town, South Africa), this EMBO Workshop will comprehensively cover current technologies and ideas in bacterial research including themes of cell division, signaling, genome biology, stress response, morphogenesis and virulence.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

Participants will be selected based on scientific excellence balanced across areas covered in this meeting. In addition, care will be taken to ensure a good balance of attendees: a. between students, postdocs, early career researchers and senior researchers b. representing different countries (India, Europe and abroad). During selection gender balance and representation from minorities will also be ensured.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. More information is available on the EMBO Travel Grants' page.

Special travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for scientists working in Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and Turkey. Grants are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

A maximum of 700 Euros per participant are available to cover registration fees, travel, and accommodation (no additional subsistence costs can be covered). To apply, please indicate the itemized amount requested in the travel grants section of the registration form.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Primarily shared accommodation. Single rooms (off-site) can be arranged at additional cost.


The resort is 61 km from the Goa international airport. Resort will arrange for shuttle services to pick and drop participants at the start and end of the meeting. In addition, transport will be available on request for visits to the airport at other times during the meeting. Private taxi is also available from the airport – this can be engaged directly by participants if preferred.

Regarded as the top 5 star hotel in Goa, the resort has Baroque-Portuguese style architecture and landscaped gardens, including an international standard golf course. It operates 263 suites with over 32,000 square feet of conference and banqueting space. The resort also has a dedicated meeting hall for hosting conferences for large groups (150 persons and more). Posters will be displayed throughout the meeting hallway outside this meeting room. The site has hosted conferences in the past and will provide state-of-the-art audio-visual support for the meeting.
