About the Workshop

Telomeres are specialized structures that protect the ends of linear chromosomes in eukaryotes. Research in this area has revealed that telomere maintenance is critical for stem cell function and normal tissue homeostasis but is also hijacked in cancers as a means to cellular immortality. This EMBO Workshop will explore the latest advances in telomere basic biology, its involvement in organism homeostasis and disease and its impact on ecology and evolution. By providing an ideal forum for open discussions, this Workshop will foster new and exciting collaborations between discovery scientists and clinicians, and provide a welcoming environment for new and young researchers to engage in this highly dynamic area of science.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Structural organization of telomeres
  • Telomeric chromatin and transcription
  • Telomere and telomerase regulation
  • Mechanisms counteracting replication stress and damage at telomeres
  • Consequences of telomere dysfunction
  • Pathogenesis and therapeutic perspectives of telomeropathies
  • Telomere ecology and evolution

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

If we need to select, applicants will be chosen based on the quality of the science in the abstract and allowing for access to a maximum of labs (i.e. if need be, we will try to diminish applicants from same labs). An additional series of talks will also be selected from abstracts and applicants will be notified at least three weeks before the Conference.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts should include title, authors, affiliations and summary and be limited to 250 words.

Poster specifications

The poster board is double-sided. Your assigned number will be in the upper left hand corner of the poster board. The poster boards are in portrait format, and authors can make use of the full dimensions of 90 cm width × 140 cm height. All the material necessary for attaching the poster to the poster board will be available at the poster area.

Each author is responsible for assembly and removal of his/her own poster. The poster sessions have a designated time. Poster presenters are requested to be available at their poster to discuss their research with the meeting attendees.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. More information is available on the EMBO Travel Grants' page.

Special travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for scientists working in Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and Turkey. Grants are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

A maximum of 700 Euros per participant are available to cover registration fees, travel, and accommodation (no additional subsistence costs can be covered). To apply, please indicate the itemized amount requested in the travel grants section of the registration form.

Child care grant

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional child care costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the child care grant and specify the sum that you will need.
