About the Workshop

Workshop illustration

Parasitic infections remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide; they kill millions annually and inflict debilitating injuries on additional millions. The vast majority of parasitic infections in humans and domestic animals can be attributed to protozoan pathogens, including those causing malaria, African sleeping sickness, leishmaniasis, or toxoplasmosis. Parasitism is found throughout the tree of life and parasitic organisms have become model systems for the study of biochemistry and molecular biology. They also represent valuable systems for integrated analyses of host-pathogen interplay.

This EMBO Workshop will showcase the latest breakthroughs in host-parasite interactions at the cell, tissue and organism levels, including sessions on host manipulation and avoidance strategies, host immune responses and pathogenesis, parasite cell biology, parasite molecular biology and signaling, parasite reservoirs and niches, vaccination and control strategies. The EMBO Workshop will cover multiple protozoan parasites (Plasmodium, Toxoplasma, Cryptosporidium, Trypanosoma, Leishmania) and provide an outstanding opportunity to share cutting-edge science. We aim to promote interactions and discussions, especially with junior scientists. The workshop will include poster sessions and turbo talks, providing younger researchers the opportunity to present their work. It will represent a stimulating environment to exchange ideas and envisage novel approaches to deal with pathogenic parasites.

We look forward to welcoming you to our Workshop,

The Organisers

CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, restrictions will apply to this workshop. Please be sure you are willing to comply before you register:

1. You must show proof of full vaccination to attend this workshop.

Selection criteria

Candidates for oral or poster presentation will be selected on the quality of the abstract in terms of the summary of the results, data and potential scientific contribution to the relative fields and to the EMBO Workshop. This information should be based on the general subject areas covered by the workshop.

The information used to decide on accepting the abstract will be the content, which should be based on an important aspect of parasitology. The information to be used will also be based on quality, clarity and focus of the description of the work and whether the abstract covers one or more of the following domains: Molecular parasitology, molecular biology, modification of host immunity, immunity, diverse and virulence specific differentiation, parasite escape, expression of pathogenic molecules, epigenetics, control of gene expression, antigenic variation, metabolic pathways, drug discovery, epidemiology and vector biology.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts are limited to 350 words (body of text) and should be submitted through the application system.

Only registered participants are eligible to submit an abstract.

Poster specifications

Poster boards are 2 m high x 1 m wide (portrait orientation). Posters should be A0 format portrait.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. More information is available on the EMBO Travel Grants' page.

Special travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for scientists working in Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and Turkey. Grants are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

A maximum of 700 Euros per participant are available to cover registration fees, travel, and accommodation (no additional subsistence costs can be covered). To apply, please indicate the itemized amount requested in the travel grants section of the registration form.

Child care grant

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional child care costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the child care grant and specify the sum that you will need.
