About the Practical Course

High throughput methods are powerful tools for addressing protein expression, purification and crystallization challenges, veritable bottlenecks for structural and biochemical studies. The goal of this EMBO practical course is to provide the students with a broad view on the latest HT available techniques, how to implement the protocols inhouse and how to access HT equipment through available platforms in the EU for protein production and crystallisation. The students will learn HT experiment design, equipment use, and data analysis for reaching their goals with their target proteins.

HT techniques are in a constant evolution adapting to new challenges. Accordingly, we include practicals covering methods on HT protein-protein interaction analysis, Cryo-EM sample preparation and HT fluorescent based methods for enzymatic activity assessment and drug screening. An updated list of speakers and new themes will engage sound experts on HT methods as well as outstanding scientist covering a broad range of structural techniques and exciting scientific topics.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

Applicants will be chosen to ensure diversity of gender and geographical representation, and a maximum of 2 industrial participants.

The participants of the course will be mainly PhD students and early post-docs. A couple of experienced staff acting as core facility manager might be selected too.

The main criteria will be the motivation of the participants to introduce high-throughput methods successfully in their current research activities. This means either working on a large number of proteins or variants or working on protein complexes.

Prior expertise in cloning, protein expression and crystallization are mandatory.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts must include title, authors, and the authors' institutional affiliations, and be a maximum of 300 words long.

In addition to an abstract, applicants must supply a motivation letter, CV, and one reference letter.

Travel grants

A limited number of travel grants are available for participants. Applicants do not need to apply separately for travel grants for this event but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered for a travel grant. Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizer who will notify all eligible participants. More information is available at EMBO Travel Grants page.

Specific travel grants and fee waivers are available for participants of any nationality working in laboratories in Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan. To apply, please send an email directly to the meeting organisers justifying your request.

Child care grant

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional child care costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the child care grant and specify the sum that you will need.
