About the Workshop

Meiosis is a defining feature of sexual reproduction. This specialized cell division program comprises a single round of DNA replication followed by two successive cell divisions, thereby reducing chromosome number by half. This reduction accommodates the later combination of two gametes during fertilization to reconstitute the original ploidy of the organism. The unique events of meiosis, including pairwise alignment of parental chromosomes, inter-homolog recombination, kinetochore attachment, cell cycle adaptations and error correction mechanisms, are intensely studied processes in numerous model organisms (fungi, protists, plants, and animals). The Meiosis field is driven by fascination in how evolution has implemented and perfected the meiotic program, and also by its significance to both plant breeding and human health. As a special topic for the 2023 EMBO Workshop, we have chosen homolog pairing. The recognition and physical pairing of homologous chromosomes is an essential feature of meiosis, and also occurs in other contexts. It is therefore timely to bring together the fields of meiotic and post-meiotic chromosome pairing to potentially uncover common principles and mechanisms.

To promote climate-friendly behavior, we encourage all participants to take the train rather than a flight whenever possible.

If you travel to Vienna by train, you will most likely arrive at one of the city's two main train stations, either "Wien Hauptbahnhof" or “Wien Westbahnhof”.

From there you can take the train to “Wallern Station” which is a cost effective and comfortable way of traveling. Simply send your travel itinerary in advance to the conference office and we will offer a complimentary service for pick-up on arrival and drop-off on departure at “Wallern Station”.

Train schedules can be found at OEBB website

We will arrange a bus shuttle from the airport to Vila Vita Pannonia.
If you wish to use the bus shuttle (EUR 50,00 one way), please indicate in the registration form.

There will be three busses available on June 18 departing from the Charterbus Terminal on Vienna International Airport to Vila Vita Pannonia:

at 10:30 am, 12:30 pm, 02:30 pm

For the departure on June 23, busses will leave from Vila Vita Pannonia to Vienna International Airport at the following times:

at 07:00 am, 10:00 am

To allow efficient transfer, please inform the conference office of your arrival and departure times and flight numbers.

Coming from Vienna on the motorway A4 towards Budapest, take the exit “Gols/Weiden” and follow the signs towards “Frauenkirchen”.

From Frauenkirchen onwards, follow the VILA VITA signs at the end of the villages leading to Wallern. Just after entering Wallern, turn right over the level crossing in direction Apetlon.

After approx. 2.5 miles you will have reached VILA VITA Pannonia.

Coming from the motorway A1, continue on the A21, the S1 and A4 towards Budapest. Take the exit Gols/Weiden and continue as detailed above.

Parking slots are available at the conference venue free of charge.

If you are traveling with an electric vehicle, free charging stations are available on site.
