About the Workshop

The complex mechanisms underlying autophagy have been elucidated by studies in simple organisms like yeast and in cell lines. However, there is accumulating evidence that autophagic processes, which include autophagic degradation and other emerging autophagy functions, play pivotal roles in the physiology of neurons and glia. In the last decade, neuroscientists have been actively pursuing new knowledge on how autophagy is regulated in these highly specialized cells, and how it contributes to brain function. The nascent field of brain autophagy field has already driven some major advances in our understanding of autophagy function in brain health and disease. This EMBO Workshop is the first to create a forum in the field of brain autophagy in order to facilitate exciting exchanges between young and established scientists, clinicians and industry and to foster new collaborations in this fast moving area.

The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Autophagosome biogenesis in neurons and glia
  • Compartmentalized autophagy: axons, dendrites and synapses
  • Autophagy in synaptic plasticity and animal behavior
  • Autophagy in neurodegeneration and brain aging
  • Non-canonical functions of autophagy in neurons and glia

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

The EMBO Workshop "Autophagy in brain health and disease" will take place as a mostly in-person event. However, due to the COVID situation, we would like to offer a virtual participation option.

For in-person participation, the organizers assure that all the necessary security measures will be guaranteed in accordance with the COVID-19 procedures, established by the Spanish government at the moment of the meeting.

Virtual participants will have access to all presentations of speakers and oral abstracts but not to poster sessions. However, they will have access to the book of abstracts, which will include information on both oral abstracts and posters. Virtual participation is limited to 50 participants. Virtual participants cannot submit an abstract.

Registration includes:

  • Accommodation (3 nights) in twin room (single +200 Euro)
  • All meals and coffee breaks (drinks included)
  • Conference dinner
  • Conference bag
  • Online abstract book
  • WI-FI access throughout
  • Airport transfers from Barcelona airport on scheduled buses (at specified times according to most arrivals). Girona transfer will only be available if sufficient number of participants travel that way.

Payment

Delegate payments will be made via the website through the registration system.

Payment details will be sent to delegates by email in January, once abstracts have been accepted.

Selection criteria

Applicants will be selected based on their relevance to the field of brain autophagy, with strong consideration for PhD students and early-stage postdocs, and paying attention to a proper balance of gender, demographic background, and basic and applied researchers. In the event that the meeting is over-subscribed, a restriction of the number of applicants from an individual lab will be imposed. The lab head will decide upon the most appropriate attendee(s).

A total of 11 applicants will be selected for short talks.

Abstract guidelines

The main text of the abstract should not exceed 200 words and should include background, experimental approach, key findings and significance to the field.

Poster specifications

Poster can be prepared in free design and fonts.

Follow the sizes below:

Width: 90 cm

Height: 120 cm

This corresponds to a A0 vertical format

Travel grants

A limited number of travel grants are available for participants. Applicants do not need to apply separately for travel grants for this event but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered for a travel grant. Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizer who will notify all eligible participants. More information is available at EMBO Travel Grants' page.

Specific travel grants and fee waivers are available for participants of any nationality working in laboratories in Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan. To apply, please send an email directly to the meeting organisers justifying your request.

Child care grant

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional child care costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the child care grant and specify the sum that you will need.
