About the Workshop

Over the past years, lactate has lost its early meaning of metabolic waste, highly enriched in tumours. So far, it has been re-discovered as a signalling molecule that plays important roles in the regulation of metabolic pathways, immune response and cell-to-cell communication, within the tumour microenvironment as well as in inflammatory disorders and other pathological conditions.

This EMBO Workshop will highlight the new recent breakthroughs by presenting state-of-the-art research tackling these questions: What are the known functional roles of lactate? Is lactate a triggering molecule of underinvestigated pathways? How can the lactate transporters/receptors targeting improve the clinical management of human tumors? How can the development of tools to trace lactate accumulation, consumption and shuttling in human tumors strongly affect the clinical approach to such pathologies? The goal of this EMBO Workshop is to provide scientists a common scenario where lactate acts and orchestrates different molecular signatures in order to promote the cross-disciplinary collaboration crucial for a comprehensive understanding of lactate metabolism and function.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

  • Abstract Submission Deadline
  • 7 June 2021

  • STUDENT/POSTDOC Free
  • ACADEMIC Free

Registration includes:

  • Workshop material
  • Accepted applicants will receive an email for further instructions to have access to the virtual platform (live events, selected posters).

Selection criteria

Scientific excellence will underlie all decisions as well as gender and geographical origin balance, with special emphasis on inclusion of female and early-stage researchers.

Please note that the two poster sessions will be limited to 80 posters each.

Each session contains short talks (15 minutes) that will be selected from the submitted abstracts by the organizers. When submitting your abstract, you can apply for an oral or poster presentation. A selection process will take place with the results announced 2-3 weeks after the abstract submission deadline.

Abstract guidelines

A 500-word max abstract should be organized in three sections: Background, Methods, Results & Conclusions.

Poster specifications

Posters size should not exceed 100cm high x 70cm wide.

Travel grants

A limited number of travel grants are available for participants. Applicants do not need to apply separately for travel grants for this event but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered for a travel grant. Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizer who will notify all eligible participants. More information is available at EMBO Travel Grants page.

Child care grant

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional child care costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the child care grant and specify the sum that you will need.
