About the Workshop

Over the past years, lactate has lost its early meaning of metabolic waste, highly enriched in tumours. So far, it has been re-discovered as a signalling molecule that plays important roles in the regulation of metabolic pathways, immune response and cell-to-cell communication, within the tumour microenvironment as well as in inflammatory disorders and other pathological conditions.

This EMBO Workshop will highlight the new recent breakthroughs by presenting state-of-the-art research tackling these questions: What are the known functional roles of lactate? Is lactate a triggering molecule of underinvestigated pathways? How can the lactate transporters/receptors targeting improve the clinical management of human tumors? How can the development of tools to trace lactate accumulation, consumption and shuttling in human tumors strongly affect the clinical approach to such pathologies? The goal of this EMBO Workshop is to provide scientists a common scenario where lactate acts and orchestrates different molecular signatures in order to promote the cross-disciplinary collaboration crucial for a comprehensive understanding of lactate metabolism and function.

Selection criteria

Scientific excellence will underlie all decisions as well as gender and geographical origin balance, with special emphasis on inclusion of female and early-stage researchers.

Please note that the two poster sessions will be limited to 80 posters each.

Each session contains short talks (15 minutes) that will be selected from the submitted abstracts by the organizers. When submitting your abstract, you can apply for an oral or poster presentation. A selection process will take place with the results announced 2-3 weeks after the abstract submission deadline.

Abstract guidelines

A 500-word max abstract should be organized in three sections: Background, Methods, Results & Conclusions.

Poster specifications

Posters size should not exceed 100cm high x 70cm wide.

Travel grants

A limited number of travel grants are available for participants. Applicants do not need to apply separately for travel grants for this event but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered for a travel grant. Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizer who will notify all eligible participants. More information is available at EMBO Travel Grants page.

Child care grant

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional child care costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the child care grant and specify the sum that you will need.

From the airport, the T2 tram line goes from the SMN train station to the airport and viceversa, making it the easiest and cheapest way to travel from the airport to the center of Florence. Trams run from 5am until 12:02am weekdays, until 12:12am on Sundays and until 1:32am on Fridays and Saturdays.

In addition, the Pisa International Airport, located 62 miles (100 km) west of Tuscany's capital, is another way to get to Florence.

By train

The closest train station is Santa Maria Novella (SMN), that is distant 5 minutes by walk from the conference venue. Trains from Pisa, Milan or Rome take no more than 2 hours to reach Florence.

About the Area

Located in a very central area of the city, the venue is within walking distance to restaurants, shops and art places. It is far less than 5 minutes walking from the Duomo of Florence and 10 from Ponte Vecchio.
