About the Workshop

For decades, studies in cell biology have focused on discovering the functions and dynamics of individual organelles. However, organelles do not exist only as single units, but also as part of entities formed through contacts between two or more distinct organelles. In fact, the recent years of studies on inter-organelle contacts have revealed that complex cellular functions, biochemical processes and signaling pathways are governed at the sites where heterotypic organelles come into contact with each other. This paradigm shift has spurred a new gold rush of research in cell biology that is transforming our understanding of cell physiology, signaling and metabolism in health and disease.

This EMBO Workshop on inter-organelle contacts biology, now at its 3rd edition, aims at bringing together the community of scientists in this field to share their work, experience, expertise, and vision. It also aims to promote collaborations, to update the nomenclature, and to foster initiatives that, ultimately, will help scientists in biomedical research to capitalize on the opportunities offered by this new field of cell biology. To that end, this year’s edition features an extended program and a large number of long- and short-talks to be selected from submitted abstracts.

Selection criteria

Participants will be selected based on their scientific impact on the conference, and gender and geographical balance. All academic participants are asked to submit an abstract describing the work they plan to present at the meeting. If no poster or short talk is to be presented, a short statement describing current research interests and reasons for Workshop participation should be provided instead. We will give preference to young scientists and PIs at an early stage of their career in the selection of short talks.

Please note: An application for registration can only be processed by the organizers once the abstract or statement of research interest has been submitted. As the number of participants is limited, we encourage early abstract/statement submission (ideally, alongside registration).

Transport

Maps for shuttle bus locations

Complimentary shuttle bus transportation for participants arriving at either Rome Fiumicino Airport (Leonardo da Vinci Airport, FCO), Rome Ciampino Airport (CIA), or Rome's Termini Station on Sunday, will be available on October 1st, 2023.

To help the organization and ensure a seat for everyone in need of shuttle bus service, at your earliest convenience please fill out the shared Google Form (click link here) and see below for detailed information:

(1) Transportation instructions for participants who will arrive in Rome BY PLANE:

Shuttle Departure Schedule from Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO):

11:00 AM / 1:00 PM / 2:30 PM / 6:30 PM

The times are scheduled to ensure everyone can arrive prior to the beginning of the congress (5:00 PM). Note: The 6:30 PM bus has reduced capacity and is reserved for participants who might experience flight delays.

Shuttle Departure from Rome Ciampino Airport (CIA):

After collecting participants from Rome Fiumicino Airport, the shuttle buses will proceed to Rome Ciampino Airport to pick up attendees arriving there.

Therefore, the shuttle schedule from Ciampino Airport to the Ambasciatori Hotel in Fiuggi is as follows:

(3) Important Note Regarding Autonomous Train Travel Directly to Fiuggi

Those considering traveling directly to Fiuggi by train, please be aware of the following important details and associated complications.

The train station you would arrive at is Fiuggi-Anagni, which is considerably distant from the Fiuggi city center and lacks taxi services. While there is a "Cotral" bus service that operates from the Fiuggi-Anagni train station to Fiuggi, it's crucial to be aware that you must purchase the Cotral bus ticket *in advance* at Rome's central train station. There are no ticket vendors at the Fiuggi-Anagni station, and tickets cannot be bought directly on the bus.

Given these circumstances, a more viable alternative might be to travel to Fiuggi using the regional "Cotral" bus service starting from Rome Termini. Tickets can be purchased at the newsstands of the station and the cost is ~ 5.00 Euro. This bus stops adjacent to the Termini station near Via Giovanni Giolitti 38, and the trip will take 1h 30min. The schedule can be found on the “Cotral” website (here). However, please be advised that the frequency of these buses is limited, especially on weekends:

Saturday: 7:00, 9:00, 13:00, 15:00, 19:00, and 20:30.

Sunday: 9:00, 13:00, and 19:00.

(Please verify these timings closer to your trip – schedules may vary!)

(4) Transportation – Return travels

Shuttle buses will be provided for return travels and organized depending on participant input on need. To that end, please complete the shared Google Form.

About the Area

The city of Fiuggi is famous for the "Acqua di Fiuggi", which flows from its natural springs that gush from the nearby mountains of the central Apennines. The water has been used since the 14th century, when Pope Boniface the 8th claimed his kidney stones had been healed by the mineral waters from the nearby Fiuggi spring. Two centuries later, the greatest master of Renaissance painting and sculpture, Michelangelo, also extolled the virtues of Fiuggi's water, which cured him of his kidney stones or, as he called them, "the only kind of stone I could not love." In later centuries, Acqua di Fiuggi was bottled and given as a special gift from the pope's ambassadors to the various royal courts of Europe. In Italy, l’Acqua di Fiuggi is still famous for its alleged healing properties.

Owing to its medieval origins, a visit to Fiuggi offers many opportunities for historical, artistic, and cultural enrichment. From here, one can go to visit attractive medieval sites, such as Subiaco, Anagni, Guarcino, and many other small ancient boroughs. Fiuggi offers the possibility of highly picturesque hiking and bicycling in localities that are as ancient as they are beautiful. Finally, it should also be noted that this region of Italy offers unparalleled culinary experiences.

Information on optional excursions and activities to experience the area’s historic, artistic, and culinary traditions will be available closer to the meeting’s date.
