About the Workshop

Workshop illustration

The trafficking of proteins to the extracellular space and the plasma membrane is known to be mediated by the endoplasmic reticulum to Golgi classical secretory pathway. However, an increasing number of cytoplasmic proteins are also delivered to the extracellular milieu in a manner that is independent of this classical route. Recent studies have revealed a number of pathways sustaining the Unconventional Protein Secretion (UPS) and those are being defined

molecularly.

  • The meeting “Unconventional protein secretion in eukaryotic cells” will serve at least three distinct functions:
  • Exposing the UPS field to the life science community and highlighting its connection to broader biology and medicine.
  • Assessing the extent of the community representing this emerging field, and structuring its evolving conceptual framework.

Presenting the latest molecular pathways (and substrates) that have been discovered. This is a key feature of the meeting to gain these molecular insights and to present its relationship to the classical secretory pathway.

We plan a focused 3-day EMBO Workshop that is meant to become the foundation for the growing UPS community dedicated to elucidating the molecular mechanisms behind it. This in turn will have a big impact on the physiological and pathological processes that are driven by unconventionally secreted proteins.

The Abstract Book can be downloaded from here.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Abstract guidelines

300 words clearly describing

-The biological question or the technical challenge

-Model system

-Which Unconventional cargo is studied?

-What type of UPS is it addressing?

-What kind of molecular advances their study is likely to provide

-Possibly a line or two (that won’t be published) explaining why it is important they attend the meeting

Poster specifications

Posters should be up to a maximum 70 cm width and 120 cm height

Travel grants

A limited number of travel grants are available for participants. Applicants do not need to apply separately for travel grants for this event but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered for a travel grant. Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizer who will notify all eligible participants. More information is available at EMBO Travel Grants' page.

Child care grant

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional child care costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the child care grant and specify the sum that you will need.
