About the Workshop

Workshop illustration

Size and shape are fundamental features of biological systems. Both are multi-level systems properties that ultimately emerge from the interplay between the genetic, molecular, and cellular levels of biological organization. Rather than considering size and shape as sub-aspect of multiple disciplines, this EMBO Workshop takes an inter-disciplinary look at how biological systems gauge and specify spatial dimensions. Topics include size regulation at the subcellular, cellular, organ, and organismal level, and our invited speakers collectively represent the genetic, cell/developmental, biophysical, and evolutionary research communities. Together, we will explore the molecular mechanisms and physical principles underlying size and shape as one of the remaining open challenges in biology.

About the venue:

NCBS/INSTEM constitutes a truly exciting conference location. As one of India’s premier research institutions, the NCBS/INSTEM campus offers excellent conference facilities, beautiful gardens, open architecture and a vibrant and welcoming research community. Add to this the warm, sub-tropical climate of Bangalore, open-air poster sessions in the evenings and bar facilities close to a swimming pool. And unbeatably cheap registration fees and comparatively cheap flight connections to Bangalore airport, ~ 30 min from campus. And, of course, exciting science. In short: Well-worth the trip.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts should contain information on the topic that will be discussed at the meeting and its relevance to size and shape. Abstracts should be no longer than 250 words.

Poster specifications

Posters should have a maximal size of 1.2 m by 1.2 m

About the Area

Bengaluru is modern day India’s higher educational hub. Along with its booming IT industry and high-tech start ups, Bengaluru is arguably one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the country that offers fascinating fusions between Indian- and Western culture. This reflects strongly in all walks of life here- from food, to architecture to the attitude of people. In addition, the city is located in close proximity to historical remains from India’s glorious and diverse past. The ancient cities such of Mysore and Hampi date back to 10 and 11th century AD and make for great getaways.

A further worth-while destination within easy reach of Bangalore are the coastal mountains of the Western Ghats, which are renowned as one of the world’s biodiversity hot spots. Please visit the following URLs for further inspiration on places to visit and things to see in and around Bangaluru:
