About the Workshop

Workshop illustration

Exocytosis and endocytosis are fundamental biological processes that are essential for membrane trafficking for all eukaryotic cells as well as the specialized secretory functions of many cell types, from immune cells to neurons. In the past, our understanding of exocytosis and endocytosis have been greatly advanced by a combination of approaches, namely genetics, cell biology, electrophysiology, biochemical reconstitution and biophysics, including single-molecule techniques. However, the increasingly sophisticated and specialized methods in one sub-field make it increasingly more difficult to stay informed about key developments in others. This EMBO workshop aims to bring together neuroscientists, biochemists, cell biologists and biophysists to create an interdisciplinary forum for exchanging results, ideas, and perspectives.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Registration includes:

  • Attendance to talks and poster sessions.
  • Cofee breaks, drinks and appetizers during poster sessions, lunches and dinners on day 1 and day 4.
  • Half day excursion on Day 3, including picnic lunch.
  • Dinners on Day 2 and 3 will be in small groups in town, led by local students. These dinners are not covered in the registration fee.
  • Acommodation for 4 nights is included in the registration fee (single room for regular academic or industrial rate and shared double room for the student/post-doc rate). Additional nights or special requirements are not included and will need to be arranged separately.

Successful applicants will be sent payment details by email.

Selection criteria

Every applicant will be asked to submit an abstract as part of the registration process. Abstracts will be selected based on relevance, scientific excellence, diversity of approaches to study exocytosis and endocytosis, and timeliness (with preference for results that are not yet published). Geographical, gender, and age diversity of the applicants will also be taken into account. Student and post-doctoral applicants should indicate whether they would like their abstracts to be considered for oral presentations in appropriate sessions.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts are limited to 300 words (excluding title and author information). Applicants should indicate if they want their abstract to be considered for an oral presentation.

Poster specifications

Poster boards are 1 m x 2.5 m. We recommend posters to be 90 cm wide and 150 cm high.

Additional Information

Registration fee includes single accommodation for the regular academic and industrial rates and double accommodation for the students/pos-doc rate.

Travel grants

A limited number of travel grants are available for participants. Applicants do not need to apply separately for travel grants for this event but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered for a travel grant. Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizer who will notify all eligible participants. More information is available at EMBO Travel Grants' page.

About the Area

Thanks to its natural beauty and the mild climate, Puerto de la Cruz was one of the earliest tourist destinations in Spain, starting to develop in the 19th century. Today it offers a more diverse range of attractions, including Lago Martiánez (designed by the Canary architect César Manrique), Jardín Beach, Loro Parque (a park and a zoo, containing the largest collection of parrots in the world), archeological museum, and churches.

In addition to Puerto de la Cruz, the island of Tenerife offers diverse attractions, including El Teide National Park that is centered around Mount Teide, the highest mountain of Spain.
