About the Practical Course

Practical Course illustration

Recent developments in scanning electron microscopes (SEM) have led to ground-breaking opportunities in volume imaging of cells and tissues. The aim of this EMBO Practical Course is to provide extensive theoretical and practical knowledge on the 3 main techniques for automated serial imaging based on SEM (ASI-SEM): microtome-based serial block-face SEM, focused ion beam SEM and array tomography. At the issue of the course, the participants will be able to assess the potentials of each technique and which fit best to their own scientific project. The participants will acquire the theoretical background to understand the different techniques as well as to optimize the imaging conditions. Data processing, analysis and management will be covered extensively, as they are inherent key considerations to all ASI-SEM techniques. An important fraction of the course will be devoted to hands-on experimentation on i) sample preparation adapted to each ASI-SEM technique ii) operation of the hardware (SEMs, automated microtomes) and iii) image processing software (stack registration, segmentation, tracing).

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

Applicants will be chosen based on their interests for the ASI-SEM techniques and the impact that these techniques will bring to their projects and carriers. Training in classical electron microscopy will be a plus.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts (250 words) should emphasize why the applicant need to become an ASi-SEM expert in its scientific carrier. Scientific questions and relevant techniques should be presented

Travel grants

A limited number of travel grants are available for participants. Applicants do not need to apply separately for travel grants for this event but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered for a travel grant. Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizer who will notify all eligible participants. More information is available at EMBO Travel Grants' page.
