About the Workshop

This EMBO Workshop on Marine Microbial Chemical Communication will bring together researchers at the forefront of understanding the chemical crosstalk of microbial interactions in the ocean. As microorganisms grow and die, they constantly produce and receive a bouquet of metabolites. Many of these metabolites serve as chemical mediators, conveying specific functional information on the trophic status, cell fate and life history of the producing microorganisms, and are thus involved in the complex web of microbial interactions in the ocean. These metabolites can mediate a wide range of biological interactions, such as predator-prey, host-pathogen, symbiosis, allelopathy, and mate selection. They can harm target cells, act as communication signals, provide chemical defense, or serve as a source of nutrients for other organisms. Recent advances in the fields of analytical chemistry, microscale fluid dynamics and cell biology, combined with the wealth of emerging ‘omics resources, now provide an unprecedented opportunity to understand the role of chemical signaling and metabolic exchange in structuring microbial populations and possible large-scale impacts on the flow of nutrients in the marine environment.

This EMBO Workshop builds on the success of the inaugural ‘Marine Microbial Chemical Communication 2025’ (‘M2C2-2025’) meeting, held in March 2025 at NIOZ, the Netherlands. The meeting brought together an inter-disciplinary group of ~100 early-career and established scientists from around the globe to discuss the recent advances and outstanding challenges in the field of marine microbial chemical ecology. It was instrumental in fostering a dedicated scientific community and setting the stage for future collaborative efforts.

This EMBO Workshop will continue strengthening this growing community by providing a platform for sharing cutting-edge knowledge, discussing emerging technologies, and identifying major bottlenecks in our understanding of the metabolic crosstalk and chemical language that underpin microbial interactions in the ocean. By bringing together researchers across disciplines and career stages, this EMBO Workshop aims to foster new collaborations and advance our understanding of how microbial interactions and chemical communication shape ecological processes across spatial and temporal scales, from microscale exchanges between individual cells to large-scale impacts on marine ecosystem dynamics and global biogeochemical cycles.

Selection criteria

The conference will feature approximately 19 selected participant talks and 2 poster sessions. All participants are encouraged to submit an abstract. Participants who are not selected for talks will be assigned to present a poster. Poster presenters will have the option to present a 1-minute flash talk preceding the poster sessions.

We aim to select participants so that we reach a balance between the four main themes of the workshop. Additionally, we would like both early-career and senior scientists to be represented, and we would like to ensure a gender-balanced workshop, with participants from as many countries as possible.

Abstract guidelines

The conference will have four session themes:

  1. Microbial interactions at the cellular level
  2. Microbial interactions at the population and community level
  3. Microbial interactions at the ecosystem level
  4. Symbiosis across scales

Upon submission, you will be asked to select at least one that best aligns with your abstract.

All abstracts must be submitted and presented in English. The abstract is limited to 200 words (excluding title, authors, and affiliations).

Figures, graphs, images, diagrams, and references cannot be included.

The authors are responsible for the content and the language quality of the abstract.

If changes need to be made to your submitted abstract, please contact us before the deadline.

Authors will be notified of acceptance via email.

To submit an Abstract, authors must be registered for the event.

Poster specifications

Posters should be designed to fit an A0 board (84.1 cm x 118.9 cm / 33.1 in x 46.8 in).

Orientation: Portrait only.

Mounting supplies (tacks or adhesive) will be provided at the venue.

EMBO Travel grants and registration fee waivers

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Your destination is the address Texel, Den Hoorn, North Holland. You can plan your trip conveniently at this link.

Transport to the TESO ferry terminal (Train + Bus)

From Schiphol Amsterdam airport or Amsterdam Central Station: Take any train that stops at ‘Station Hoorn’ railway station. From there, take the train to ‘Station Den Helder’.

There will be shuttle services from the Den Helder train station to the hotels organized on Sunday, March 14, at two time slots (times will be notified closer to the conference).

Otherwise, once you have arrived in Den Helder, take bus 33 to the TESO ferry terminal. This bus departs every 12 minutes past the hour from the bus terminal directly next to Den Helder railway station. You can also walk from the train station to the TESO ferry terminal (~25 minutes). Take a look at the route at this link.

Taking the TESO ferry to Texel

The TESO ferry leaves Den Helder on an hourly service at every 30 minutes past the hour (XX:30 hrs). The crossing to Texel takes only 20 minutes.

Detailed information about the tickets and timetables can be found on the TESO website. Tickets can be

purchased online (in advance) or real time at the ticketing machine or ticketing desk. The return journey does not require a ticket. Take into consideration that the last ferry leaves at 9.30pm.

Arrival to hotels

Hotel rooms are booked and pre-paid at Hotel Lindeboom in Den Burg or at Van der Valk Hotel Texel in De Koog.

On the day of arrival, it takes 15 or 30 minutes by bus or by a reserved minibus (Texel Hopper) from the ferry terminal to the hotels. To take the public transportation, make sure you exit the ferry on the righthand side. Like all other

Dutch public transport, you can ‘tap in/ tap out’ with your card or pay app, but cash is not accepted in the bus. The ticket cost is: €3.30. You can also buy a ticket here in advance.

For those staying at Hotel Lindeboom: On the day of arrival, it takes 15 minutes by bus from the ferry terminal to get to Hotel Lindeboom. To take the bus, make sure you exit the ferry on the righthand side (otherwise you will miss the bus). Take bus 28 (direction De Koog via Den Burg) and exit at bus-stop at Elemert/Centrum. From there it is a 3-minute walk to the hotel.

For those staying at Van der Valk Hotel Texel: On the day of arrival, it takes 30 minutes by bus from the ferry terminal to get to Van der Valk Hotel Texel. The quickest option is to order a Texel Hopper online or call to 0222-784 000 (From Pontweg Veerhaven, 't Horntje (1-1) to De Pelikaan, De Koog (141-10)). Make a reservation at least 30 minutes prior to your preferred departure time and make sure you exit the ferry on the righthand side. Travelling by the Texel Hopper drops you off right at the hotel's entrance.

The other option is to take the regular bus. Make sure you exit the ferry on the righthand side (otherwise you will miss the bus). Take bus 28 (direcGon De Koog via Den Burg) and exit at bus-stop Pontweg-Pelikaanweg. From there is it a 10-minute walk to the hotel.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION TICKETS

Buying a train (e-)ticket

Order your ticket online in advance:

  1. Go to Travel planner
  2. Insert your departure station, arrival station ‘Den Helder’, date and preferred time
  3. Click on the button ‘Order train ticket’ and follow the process steps
  4. Payment can be done by credit card or Ideal (Yoursafe, Revolut and N26 are available for non-residents)

Buy a ticket at an NS ticketing machine:

OV Pay: Enter the 14-digit payment reference number (appears on your bank statement next to NLOV) and the amount that was debited from your account.

What can I use to check in and out?

You can check in and out with:

  1. Contactless debits card from ABN AMRO, ASN bank, bunq, ING, Rabobank, Knab, Regiobank, SNS or Triodos

About the Area

Texel (pronounced Tess-el) is the largest and most visited of the Dutch Wadden Islands. Located a short 20-minute ferry ride from Den Helder, it is renowned for its expansive sandy beaches, wildlife-rich nature reserves, and charming farmlands.

Sustainability at the meeting
