About the Workshop

The organization of cells into membrane-bound compartments is fundamental to life, requiring proteins to cross these barriers through highly specialized translocation systems. Understanding these processes is essential for uncovering the molecular basis of cellular function and its impact on health and disease. For over two decades, EMBO’s Protein Translocation Workshops have been at the forefront of this field, driving progress in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems.

This 2026 EMBO Workshop will highlight cutting-edge structural and mechanistic insights into classical translocation pathways, powered by revolutionary new technologies. Traditionally this EMBO Workshop focusses on the canonical protein trafficking pathways found in diverse bacteria and in eukaryotic organelles: mitochondria, chloroplasts, peroxisomes and the endoplasmic reticulum. In addition, we will venture into exciting new territory—exploring emerging evidence for previously unknown protein transport systems, particularly in unique endosymbiotic contexts. Attendees will gain exposure to groundbreaking discoveries, conceptual advances, and the latest developments shaping this dynamic area of research.

This EMBO Workshop offers a vibrant platform for early-career and established scientists to share findings, engage in stimulating discussions, and build collaborations. Since 2003, these meetings have fostered innovation and community growth, and their continuation remains vital for inspiring the next generation of researchers.

This EMBO Workshop will also incorporate two moderated panel sessions, one that focuses on student and postdoc career development and another aimed at gender and ethnicity issues in the daily life of researchers

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

If the number of applications exceeds the site capacity, the three organizers will create a priority list based on the following criteria:

  • Relevance of the research to the workshop remit (i.e., protein targeting and translocation)
  • Career stage, with priority given to early-career group leaders, postdoctoral researchers, and advanced graduate students
  • Gender and geographical location, to achieve a diverse and representative distribution of participants, particularly those from the meeting’s location (see note above)
  • Subject area, with priority given to participants who will cover topics that are not dealt with by the invited speakers. Priority will also be given to subjects that fit into our New Frontier session
  • Laboratory affiliation, to ensure a minimal number of representatives from the same research group

All selected participants will be requested to present a poster. In addition, a number of abstracts will be selected for either short talk or flash talk presentations.

Abstract guidelines

The Abstract should contain the following information:

  • Title (maximum 20 words)
  • Authors and affiliations (the presenting author and the senior author/supervisor should both be clearly indicated)
  • Main text (100-150 words)

Please indicate whether you would like your abstract to be considered for an oral presentation.

Poster specifications

A0 portrait. Maximum width, 95 cm; maximum height, 150 cm.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Accessibility grants

EMBO offers accessibility grants to support participants at EMBO Courses & Workshops with any access needs. These grants cover up to 500 Euros for any additional costs e.g. to adapt the conference environment, or to be accompanied by someone to assist them where necessary.

Participants with access needs may apply for a grant via the registration system of the related EMBO event, or by emailing the organizers of the related EMBO event directly.
