About the Workshop

Workshop illustration

A decade of groundbreaking research on bacterial CRISPR-Cas defence systems has culminated in the development of revolutionary editing technologies. This tool has been exploited to create transgenic microorganisms, plants, and animals, for gene discovery and to study gene function, paving the way for unparalleled scientific advancements in basic research and biotechnology. Several clinical trials are leveraging CRISPR-Cas to treat patients with promising results. This EMBO workshop will bring together experts in the editing space, who are studying the CRISPR-Cas immune defence system, developing novel and safer editing approaches, and applying them to the clinic. We anticipate a truly interdisciplinary gathering, where insights into new bacterial defence mechanisms, structural biology, functional genomics, and therapeutic applications will converge around the central theme of CRISPR-Cas. By fostering this collaborative environment, we aim to enhance the understanding and accelerate the progress of research in these interconnected fields. Given the rapid advances in this field, an in-person meeting will be invaluable for scientists to share and discuss their latest discoveries.

About the Area

Sorrento is a charming coastal town overlooking the stunning Bay of Naples in Southern Italy. Of probable Greek origin, it later became the Roman resort of Surrentum, and has long been celebrated for its mild climate, breathtaking views, and timeless beauty.

Nestled on the cliffs of the Sorrentine Peninsula, the town offers a perfect blend of natural and cultural treasures. Visitors can stroll through the historic center, explore the beautiful Sorrento Cathedral, and admire the serene 14th-century cloister of St. Francis of Assisi—a tranquil spot often used for concerts and exhibitions.

Sorrento is also renowned for its culinary traditions. Local specialties include freshly caught seafood, handmade gnocchi, and desserts flavored with citrus fruits grown on the surrounding hills. The region is famous for limoncello, a lemon liqueur traditionally served chilled, and for its excellent olive oil and wines.

The town is well connected and serves as a perfect base for exploring the Amalfi Coast, the island of Capri, Pompeii, and Naples—all easily accessible by ferry, bus, or train.

Whether you're wandering its cobbled streets, relaxing in a seaside café, or watching the sunset over the bay, Sorrento offers an unforgettable experience that blends history, nature, and Mediterranean hospitality.
