About the Workshop

Computational methods and biophysical experiments have advanced rapidly in parallel over recent decades, and are now applied widely to gain molecular-level insights on biological systems. The vast majority of biophysical methods report on the behavior of populations of molecules or on the properties of states of a system. Yet a quantitative understanding of biological systems requires a molecular-level description of phenomena that is generally unobtainable from measurements carried out in bulk. Computations carried out on single macromolecules do not necessarily reflect the statistical nature of molecular behaviors or systems that is captured by experiment. Yet computational approaches can be highly valuable for predicting and interpreting experimental results, and for designing critical experiments to test hypotheses. Experimental and computational biophysicists could advance their fundamental knowledge of biological systems more rapidly and thoroughly by applying the two approaches in concert. Thus, both experimentalists and computational biologists, and biology itself, stand to benefit from this EMBO Workshop how best to exploit the synergies of the two approaches.

Selection criteria

Evaluation of all applicants will use the formal criteria established by EMBO and the qualifications accessible from the applicant’s motivation letter, CV, and recommendation letters that accompany the application.

Participants who have experience in either computational or experimental approaches to a biological system, but not necessarily both, will be prioritized for selection. Among these, participants will be prioritized for selection if their biological system appears to be developed to a degree that is suited to the synergistic approaches that will be addressed in this workshop.

Participants who intend to present a poster will also be prioritized for selection.

Abstract guidelines

  • Each applicant can submit only one abstract to the event.
  • Abstracts are limited to 200 characters title and 2,000 characters body text.
  • Abstract titles should use sentence case (i.e., only the first letter of the title should be capitalized)
  • No graphics will be accepted in the submission of abstracts.
  • The body of the abstract should be in a single paragraph. If subheaders are used, they should be within that single paragraph in all-caps, not bolded (e.g., METHODS:)
  • References or Acknowledgments are allowed within abstracts, but not required.
  • Please ensure all special characters and formatting display correctly.

Poster specifications

Posters will be displayed on poster boards in a dedicated area at the venue, and should not exceed 100 cm (width) × 140 cm (length).

Travel grants

A limited number of travel grants are available for participants. Applicants do not need to apply separately for travel grants for this event but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered for a travel grant. Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizer who will notify all eligible participants. More information is available at EMBO Travel Grants' page.

Child care grant

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional child care costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the child care grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Event participants will stay directly on campus in the conference center or at a B&B/hotel, which is a 3-min walk from the event venue.

Participants’ accommodation will be booked by the organisers on behalf of the participants. The approximate costs for the participants will be in the range of 28-40 Euros/night, depending on single or double occupancy and the type of a room.

Transport

If you travel from Prague, Czech Republic
Take a train (recommended) or a bus to České Budějovice.

From České Budějovice you can travel by:

Bus to Nové Hrady (recommended)

The bus station in České Budějovice is located on top of the Mercury Shopping Center, which is basically opposite to the Central railway station. The bus station in Nové Hrady is a few minutes walk from the venue.

Train to Nové Hrady train station, then by bus to Nové Hrady bus station.

Travel from the Central railway station in České Budějovice to Nové Hrady train station, which is actually 5 kilometers away from the town of Nové Hrady. Then you need to take a bus from Nové Hrady train station to Nové Hrady bus station.

If you travel from Vienna, Austria
Take a train to Gmünd, Austria. This town is located on the border between the Czech Republic and Austria. The Czech part is called České Velenice, but it’s still the same train station. Here you need to change trains. Travel from České Velenice train station to Nové Hrady train station, then take a bus from Nové Hrady train station to Nové Hrady bus statuion.

About the Area

Nové Hrady (Czech Republic) is a small town in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, having just under 3,000 inhabitants. The town lies in the Nové Hrady Mountains (Novohradské Hory in Czech) close to the Czech-Austrian border. It is about 30 km south-east of the town of České Budějovice on a hill above the Stropnice river.

The Region of South Bohemia is an administrative unit of the Czech Republic, located mostly in the southern part, bordering Austria in the south and Germany in the west. Owing to its geographical location and natural conditions the region belongs to the areas where the first settlements began to appear in the distant past. In the past centuries, South Bohemia was famous for fishpond cultivation and forestry.

The regional capital České Budějovice (Budweis in German) is a pretty town with approximately 100,000 inhabitants and a definite must-see. Located in the center of a valley of the Vltava River, it is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of České Budějovice, the University of South Bohemia, and the Academy of Sciences. Probably best known for the original Budweiser beer, there are many other places of interest there as well. The old town preserves interesting architecture from the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and 19th century periods. This includes buildings around the large Ottokar II Square, the old Town Hall with murals and bronze gargoyles, the 16th century Black Tower and the most valuable historic building in České Budějovice - the Dominican convent with the Gothic Presentation of the Virgin Mary church from the 13th century, on Piaristic Square.

The town of Český Krumlov with its beautiful castle – a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Hluboká nad Vltavou with its picturesque Tudor-style Hluboká Castle, are also worth to visit.

For countryside favorers, the near vicinity of Nové Hrady offers many interesting sites to visit. The nearby Theresa Valley with a romantic English-style park and waterfall provides a one-off experience. The Hojná voda Primaeval Forest is (along with the Sophie Primaeval Forest) the oldest Reserve in Continental Europe with 400-year old trees. The Cow Mountain with its observation tower in this forest is an ideal place for a trip for active sportsmen. In this area you can see blockfields, granite rocks and a mushroom rock called Napolean’s Head.
