About the Workshop

Workshop illustration

Neuronal guidance molecules, beyond their recognized role in axon guidance, are now implicated in a variety of processes ranging from neural circuit development and plasticity, to angiogenesis and immune response. Furthermore, it has become clear that changes in expression, function, or activity of these proteins might lead to pathologies ranging from neurological disorders to cancer, and diseases of the immune and circulatory systems. For these reasons, this EMBO Workshop is designed to bring together senior and junior researchers who investigate diverse guidance signaling pathways implicated in development and disease. These include for example those elicited by Semaphorins, Ephrins, Netrins, Hedgehog, adhesive substrates, and also many other extracellular cues that control cell behavior in normal and pathological tissues. We anticipate this EMBO Workshop will provide an outstanding venue to enhance research efforts in several fields that have much to teach each other, but often do not find suitable forums for productive cross-disciplinary interactions.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Payment

Applicants for attendance and abstract submission at this EMBO Workshop should fill in the online registration form by the indicated deadline. At this stage no payment is requested.

Potential participants will be informed by e-mail about the outcome of their application by 5 February and—if successful—will be requested to proceed with the payment of registration fee by 15 February.

The full payment of registration fees (including accommodation costs) is requested in advance and can be made by credit card (or wire transfer); prospective attendees will be given all payment details by email.

A cancellation policy will be implemented, ensuring 90% refund for cancellation before March 31st, and incremental deductions for cancellations in the subsequent weeks.

Selection criteria

In case requests for attendance exceed our limits (110 participants, excluding speakers), the Organizing Committee will select applicants for participation, taking into account the quality of submitted abstracts, in addition to criteria that ensure a wide representation of different laboratories, countries, research topics, and diversity of attendees.

Abstract submission for poster or oral presentations is currently open til January 31, 2019. Late abstracts of exceptional interest may be submitted for the organizers' consideration at nguidance.workshop@gmail.com even after the indicated deadline, provided that registration for workshop attendance is still open (before 31 March 2019).

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts should not exceed 3000 characters (including spaces). They should clearly illustrate the specific topic and scientific question/rationale of the study, the guidance molecules investigated, the experimental models applied, and—if applicable—the results obtained.

Abstract proponents may indicate whether they would prefer to present their data in a poster session or in a short talk. Around twenty abstracts will be selected for oral presentations in the main speakers sessions.

Poster specifications

Posters should be maximum 1 meter wide (and 1.5 meters tall). All posters will be on display during the entire workshop. Two poster sessions will be arranged for discussion with alternate groups of presenters. Detailed instructions for poster presentations will be provided at a later stage.

A best Poster Prize will be assigned (funded by EMBO Press).

Travel grants

A limited number of travel grants are available for participants. Applicants do not need to apply separately for travel grants for this event but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered for a travel grant. Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizer who will notify all eligible participants. More information is available at EMBO Travel Grants' page.

Child care grant

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional child care costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the child care grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Venue

The chosen location is Baveno, a small village on the coast of Lake Maggiore facing the Alps in Northern Italy. The workshop will be held at the Hotel Splendid (http://splendid.zaccherahotels.com/en/), which is an excellent four stars venue, offering high-standard conference spaces and facilities.

The venue is less than a one hour drive from the main airport hub of Milan-Malpensa, connected by motorway. However, it is quiet and secluded, with a beautiful lakefront. Shared shuttle busses and minivans will be organized for speakers and participants to commute from/to the airport.

Accommodation

The Hotel Splendid can accommodate all participants in private or shared double rooms. A high-quality restaurant will offer the best Italian cuisine at meals organized during the conference.

The hotel is just the right size to provide the space and facilities for the expected attendance. No other events will be hosted by the hotel during the time of the proposed workshop.

Free wireless internet access is offered in all private and common spaces.

Open air Pool at the Hotel is open and free for workshop participants.

Car parking at the Hotel is free for guests, depending on availability.

Shared room accommodation will be arranged as requested if two registrants designate each other as requested companions. Otherwise, room assignment will be arranged by the organizing secretary.

Students can alternatively request an optional cheaper accommodation in shared rooms or suites (2-5 people) in a Residence connected with the Hotel (breakfast not included). This package still includes lunch and dinners, and also the social program and bus transfers. The registration fee for this option is reduced to 400/350 Euros (depending on room size/occupancy), and it will be offered on a first-come first-served basis. Interested registrants should directly contact the organizing secretary to arrange this solution.

Transport

The venue can easily be reached by car and by train (Baveno railway station).

Moreover, it is less than a one hour drive from the main airport hub of Milan-Malpensa, connected by motorway.

Shared shuttle busses and minivans will be organized for speakers and participants to commute from/to the airport.

About the Area

Baveno is a welcoming small village on the lakeside, with relaxing views on the lake and its islands, and the surrounding alpine scenery. The hotel is just outside the center, flanked by a green park running aside the lake (on one hand) and by a small sandy beach (on the other).
