About the Workshop

Workshop illustration

Integrative Systems and Synthetic Biology endeavors are most effective when there is a template available. Chile contains some of the most extreme conditions of all inhabited countries on the planet. From Patagonia in the extreme south, to the 20-degree range in temperatures for marine life on the coasts, to the plant life in the highest elevation desert there are species that have adapted and evolved to survive under diverse and extreme conditions. Using them as templates can highlight changes in pathways from energy and oxygen metabolism to lipid synthesis, DNA damage repair, and cellular mechanical stability. Likewise, from isolated human populations at the top of the Andes to miners at the base and fisherman on the coast there is an enormous diversity in responses to hypoxia conditions, temperature, and diet. The goal of this EMBO Workshop is to fuse Chilean expertise on biodiversity and local extremophiles with European expertise in metabolic and damage-response pathways, high-throughput sequencing, proteomic and bioinformatics, and biotechnology platforms to develop a set of blueprints for systems adaptations in changing climates and ecosystems. The knowledge gained from studying these extremophiles and diversity should lead to the engineering of better agro- and aqua-culture species that can survive climate changes, optimizing microorganisms to produce new synthetic polymers based on how they resist the elements and/or degrade manufacturing byproducts, and developing better mechanisms for treating hypoxia and damage from other environmental stresses.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

Participants will be selected from their abstracts to ensure that proportional representation of the different topics is achieved. Additional criteria will include diversity in nationalities and gender. From the abstracts we will also select 20 individuals for 15 minute talks and another 20 for two sessions of 2 min flash talks prior to each poster session.

Abstract guidelines

300 word limit (not including title, authors or author affiliations). Abstracts should include specifics and not just generalizations and should include at least some unpublished data.

The content is the responsibility of the author and will be shown in the abstract book as entered in the application

Travel grants

A limited number of travel grants are available for participants. Applicants do not need to apply separately for travel grants for this event but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered for a travel grant. Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizer who will notify all eligible participants. More information is available at EMBO Travel Grants' page.

Child care grant

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional child care costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the child care grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Additional Information

Those wishing to save on accommodation costs can share a room in one of the residential registration options. However, students may find it significantly less expensive to choose the non-residential registration option and stay at one of several nearby youth hostels.

Transport

Santiago is located in the center of Chile and apart from local attendees it is expected that delegates will arrive by plane. The Casa Central Campus is located in downtown Santiago, 20 minutes car ride from Arturo Merino Benítez Airport, the main international airport in Chile. Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto Internacional Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez, IATA: SCL, ICAO: SCEL) is located in Pudahuel, 15 km (9.3 mi) north-west of downtown Santiago, is Chile's largest aviation facility and the busiest international airport in the country. Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport has domestic and international services to destinations in Europe, Oceania, Asia and the Americas. Its location in the center of the country makes of it an ideal main hub for most airlines. Public transportation to and from the airport is either by taxi, shuttle or airport bus. For taxis just visit one of the taxi company counters just after you exit the baggage area and before you exit into the main airport lobby. Visitors can purchase a flat-rate ticket for their destination in an individual car or in a shared shuttle. They will direct visitors to the main lobby, where someone wearing distinct uniform of the company will take the visitor to the taxi. Centropuerto airport bus offers a budget rate service from the airport into the city. Stops (both ways) are located at street level near Metro (subway or underground network) stations Los Héroes, Estación Central, Universidad de Santiago, San Alberto Hurtado, Las Rejas, and Pajaritos. Buses run every 10 minutes to the airport from 5:55am until 10:30pm and from the airport from 6am until 11:30pm. Visitors arriving or departing outside these times will need to choose another option. As always, there is the option of renting a carrental agencies have counters alongside the taxi and shuttle bus companies in the main lobby of the airport.

About the Area

UC Casa Central Campus is located in one of the most dynamic neighborhoods in Santiago. Just across the street is the Cerro Santa Lucia park, where a short walk up a 69 meter hill filled with gardens and two 200 year old forts affords spectacular views of the whole city. Just North and across the street from the campus is the trendy artist Lastarria district, with a wide range of food available, theaters, cultural centers, cinemas, bookstores, art galleries, design shops and antique shops, all make this district an oasis for culture. You can walk around this area full of restaurants and enjoy the intense nightlife of its streets and many pubs and bars.

At the edge of this (~a 5 minute walk from the campus) is the roughly 10 square city block Parque Forestal, in side of the park you can find the Chilean National Museum of Fine Arts, established in 1880 making it the oldest in South America, that counts with Chilean art collections dated since la Colonia up to our days. On the north shore of the Mapocho river is the trendy Bellavista neighborhood also filled with restaurants and nightclubs.

The core of downtown is less than 10 minutes South of the campus, there you can find Santiago’s historic center. A great part of the history of Chile has been written at the Plaza de Armas (Main Square) and its surrounding buildings. Around its streets you can find old buildings like the Santiago City Hall, the Cathedral, the National History Musem, the Court Houses, and many others.
