About the Workshop

Workshop illustration

The mitochondrial genome encodes for key subunits of the oxidative phosphorylation system and RNA components needed for mitochondrial translation. Nuclear genes encode the enzyme systems responsible for mitochondrial DNA replication, DNA repair, transcription and translation. Dysfunction of these machineries underlies a great variety of human diseases and modulates organismal aging. Recent years have seen a rapid development in our understanding of these machineries, but many important aspects still remain unknown.

At this EMBO Workshop we wish to highlight the rapid advances that are presently being made in research into the basal molecular mechanisms underlying gene expression by the mitochondrial genetic system such as: DNA replication; DNA recombination and repair; Transcription and mRNA stability; Mitochondrial ribosomes, protein synthesis and assembly. The EMBO Workshop will assemble a selected group of leading scientists studying different aspects of mitochondrial molecular biology employing various types of organisms such as mouse, yeast and fly. Gathering these experts will allow to discuss and evaluate the molecular mechanisms of these processes in a broad and interdisciplinary perspective and define the future challenges in this urgent and fascinating research field.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Transport

Sånga Säby is located close to Arlanda, the main Swedish international airport.

By car (40 minutes from Stockholm, 1h from Arlanda)

Drive towards Bromma Airport and Brommaplan. At Brommaplan drive towards Ekerö via Drottningholm castle. At the Tappström roundabout, turn off towards Färentuna and continue on this main road (Färentunavägen) for about 12 km. Turn off into a winding country road (follow signs for Sånga Säby) and drive about 5 km to Sånga-Säby.

By public transportation (1h 10 min from Stockholm)

Take the green metro line towards Hässelby or Åkeshov. Get off at Brommaplan. From Brommaplan there are buses to Sånga-Säby (bus 176 from Brommaplan to Stenhamra. You change bus in Stenhamra to bus 317). The bus tour takes about 45 minutes from Brommaplan to Sånga-Säby. For current bus times and travel planning visit SL's website or call SL Traffic Information, tel. +46-(0)8-600 10 00

By shuttle bus:

There are two organized bus shuttles from the bus station Cityterminalen, located adjacent to Stockholm main station (T-Centralen), to Sånga Säby on May 20, leaving at 13:00 and 14:00. The gate where the bus leaves will be labelled “EMBO workshop Sånga Säby”.

On May 24, the bus shuttle from Sånga Säby to Arlanda airport will leave at 13:30. The bus will make a stop at Brommaplan, from where you can take the subway to the central station or other places in Stockholm.
