About the Workshop

The incidence of obesity with more than 600 million people world-wide and associated metabolic diseases has reached pandemic dimensions. However, no effective pharmacological nor behavior-based therapy for obesity is presently available. Mammals have adipose tissue with opposite functions. While white adipose tissue (WAT) serves as crucial energy reservoir to survive periods of starvation, brown adipose tissue (BAT) and brown-like (BRITE) adipocytes in WAT dissipate energy as heat to protect against cold, also known as non-shivering thermogenesis.

Speakers will cover topics from BAT progenitors and stem cells to human BAT and clinical implications for obesity therapies. This range of research topics will permit participants to decipher the underlying regulatory network in brown adipose tissue function and how they may be affected in disease.

The overall aim of this EMBO workshop is to provide an up-to-date insight into the field of BAT metabolism and its therapeutic potential and to bring scientists together to stimulate discussions and the exchange of knowledge, concepts and methodology in this increasingly recognized area of research.
